Cabo Girão (Girão Cape) is the biggest cliff in Europe. It is located in the island of Madeira, and it can be seen from the sea or visited from land to enjoy its fantastic views.
This impressive cliff has 580 metres of free fall.
it is believed that the name “Girão”, which means “turn”, dates from the first exploration trip to the Zarco coast in 1420. In the travel journal they wrote that they were sailing “towards an obscure and imposing object… home of demons and bad spirits.” After this, Zarco decided not to venture further and came back looking for a safe place, dropping the anchor in what we know today as the fishing town of Câmara de Lobos.
To enjoy a different perspective of Girão Cape, you can reenact Zarco’s voyage on a boat trip. There are numerous companies offering this type of trips from Funchal.
The trips take around half the day and they reach Ponta do Sol, an ideal place to enjoy the warm crystal-clear waters of the sea in this area of Portugal.
The cliff also counts with a cable car which goes down to the beach, where there are also little vineyard terraces digged out in the rocks.
Here you will also find the Capela da Nossa Senhora da Fátima Chapel, built in 1931, which is currently one of the most important pilgrimage places in the island.
