Ribeiro Frio is an exquisite place, surrounded by aromatic forests, offering a welcoming environment. Its hillsides are crowded with numerous vegetal species and make up the Forest Part of Madeira.
Here, taking advantage of the environmental benefits, it has been installed a little trouts fish farm. Obviously, the trout is one of the most recommended dishes of its neighbouring restaurant.
At the other side of the road you will find a forest. In its clearings, trees and flower bushes have been planted, creating a miniature botanic garden, where butterflies add a touch of colour.
Ribeiro Frio is the intersection of different “levadas” or paths. One of the easiest and recommended paths is the Caminho dos Balcões Path, which is accessed by going down through the hillside, from the fish farm, and taking the wide road which is seen on the left, until it reaches the levada. If you keep walking along this path for another 10 minutes, you will arrive to Balcões, an open overlook towards a magnificent landscape which goes from Ametade Valley to Penha de Águia, in the Northern coast. The levada continues another 2 km, with views of the volcanic peaks which surround the Pico do Arieiro Pike.
Crossing the road you will find the Levada do Furado. If you walk up to the bridge of the Bezerro Rivera (for around an hour) you will enjoy the beautiful views of the interior of the green and mountainous central Madeira.
