The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte Church stands on a hill of the city of Monte, in the Island of Madeira. This church was built in the old site of a chapel built in 1470 by Adam Gonçalves Ferreira who, with his twin sister Eva, were the first two children to be born in the Island of Madeira.
Its facade counts with a Baroque gable and it is opened through big windows and a portico with porches.
Inside, it hosts a beautiful statue of the Virgin on a silver tabernacle. According to the story, in the 15th century. a shepherd girl received a statue of the Virgin, to whom lots of miracles are attributed.
The Northern chapel hosts the imposing black sarcophagus of the Emperor Carlos I, who passed away in Madeira because of pneumonia at 35, and was beatified by the Pope John Paul II, as a first step towards holiness.
In front of the church, there is a stairway with 74 steps, which are climbed by keeling penitents every August 15th, when the festivity of Asunción is held.ation:
