The Pico do Arieiro Pike, 1818 meter high, is the third highest summit in the Island of Madeira. It is highly advised to climb all the way up to the top of this mountain to enjoy the great beauty of the volcanic landscape and its wonderful views.
To reach the peak you can depart from Funchal northbound through the EN 103 up to the Poiso walkway or keep going Westward through the EN 202.
Along the way you will have the feeling of travelling to a different world as you climb. This is because the green forest that covers most of central Madeira, gives here way to a much more naked landscape, typical of the highlands. This feeling is intensified by the cloudy belt which is seen as soon as you reach the 1,200 metres height. When you surpass this cloudy area, which sometimes causes torrential rains, you will see the sunlight again. Sooner than later the naked rock turns into the predominant feature of this landscape, where only the hardest and toughest plants survive.
Once you are here, the lack of vegetation is made up for an endless string of mountain ranges and beautiful impressive cliffs. In this place, the clouds stop over the deepest valleys and the wind is the only sound you will hear. The predominant colours of the area are violet, ochre and chocolate brown, intensified by the red and orange beams of the sunset or by the pink light of the sunrise.
If you are fit and into hiking, you can go through the road which links the Pico do Arieiro Pike with the Pico Ruivo Pike, the highest one in Madeira.
