The Mercado dos Lavradores Market offer a colorful selection of the island’s products and turns out to be an excellent place to buy fruits, flowers and Madeiras souvenirs.
This famous market was built in the 30s for the fishermen and farmers so that they could sell their products directly to the people. Nowadays, the majority of the stands are owned by traders, even though the original spirit is maintained on Fridays, when the farmers from the furthest areas of Madeira come to Funchal.
Here the flower sellers are dressed with the traditional costumes of the island, especially on the close to the entrance of the market. On their stands, they offer a great variety of flowers and freshly picked bulbs.
The fishing stands are also worth visiting, not just because of the diversity of fresh fish offered, but also to see the odd delicious peixe espada preto (known as Black Scabbardfish for the English speakers), who lives in the great depths of the ocean.
On the top roof, you will find fruit and in-season vegetables stands. The traders usually offer their products to taste them.
This market is worth the visit because of its hubbub and colour, even if you have no intention of buying anything.
