Caniçal was the last whaling port in the South of Europe until 1981, when the hunting and trading of whales was forbidden by an international treaty. After this, Caniçal survived until it turned into one of the main especialized in tuna fishing ports in all Portugal.
Near the port, a little bit downhill from the village, you will find the interesting Museu da Baleia (Whale Museum), where you can learn more about the whaling tradition of Madeira and its restructuring.
At the feet of the hill where the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Piedade Chapel stands, Prainha Beach is located, a tiny black sand beach of volcanic origin which offers a different kind of beach.
