Vila Baleira is the capital of Porto Santo, where the main inhabitants of the island live.
Bartolomeu Perestrelo founded the island, becoming the first governor of it. He was really lucky, because this colony was a thriving producer of cereals, wine and sugar during XV c.
In Largo do Pelourinho, major square of the city, two beautiful surviving dragon trees flank the entrance which lead to the XVI c. town hall.
Beside the city hall, the Rua (Street) Infante D Henrique will lead you to the beach.
Further north, stands Nossa Senhora da Piedade Church. It has been rebuilt several times due to the sacking of North American and French pirates. A little lateral chapel of XV c. is the only original remaining.
Behind the church, stands the Columbus House Museum, which is believed to have hosted the Genovese discoverer on his visit to Porto Santo.
On the back of the city, stand the Pico do Castelo (437 m). Its top has volcanic origins, and it is the basis of a XVI c. fortress.
