This museum, also known as Fortress Museum, is located between two bastions of the São Lourenço Palace (16th century), in the city of Funchal, Madeira.
The entrance of the museum if an old stone arch behind the Avenida Arriaga Avenue, in front of the tourism office.
The fortress was unfinished in 1566, when Bernard de Montluc, a French pirate, looted the island capturing more than 250 citizens and killing them inside the walls.
Currently, the fortress is catalogued as a monument and considered to be one of the best preserved Portuguese fortresses.
The museum has two rooms which were part of the guardian house. Inside them, weapons and old uniforms are exhibited.
