Madeira counts with great environmental and cultural factors for hiking lovers. Nowadays, a lot of visitors choose this destination almost exclusively to go all over its different circuits and explore the island on foot.
You can enjoy the unspoilt paradise by walking towards the interior of the island.
In Madeira you will find around 1.400 levadas, or trails, to explore. They are inviting you to discover unique landscapes that will leave you breathless.
The rustic nature of the island and its environment, typical of a mountain, enables you to walk through extraordinary landscape beauty.
The majority of the walks are easy for everybody; however, there different degrees of difficulty. Some of the highest recommended tours are the climbing to Pico do Areeiro (Arieiro Peak), the ascent of the Pico do Ruivo (Ruivo Peak), Encumeada trail, the levada of the 25 fountains trail, and the Ponta de São Lourenço Path.
Another gorgeous tour is the one from Santana to Caldeirão Verde, which lasts over an hour. Here you will find a waterfall of 300 metres high, which falls over a puddle with moss and ferns.
The Praia de Porto Santo Beach, 9 km long, also turns out to be an ideal place to make long walks. However, this little island also offer greater challenges, such as the rise of Pico do Castelo (Castelo Peak). Climbing this peak will allow you to admire the stunning views from its overlook. Also, why not going for a stroll in Pico do Facho (Facho Peak)?
From Pico Branco to Terra Chã there is also a mountain trail which is really interesting.
