Curral das Freiras is a valley of the concelho of Câmara de Lobos, hidden between the peaks of the central mountain range of the island of Madeira.
This remote valley, known as the Nuns Farmyard, has been described many times as one of the greatest landscapes in the world.
This place invites you to enjoy some wonderful views, although, during high season, it might be complicated to find a quiet spot due to the number of visitors. Sundays are the most crowded because it is when the market takes place in the streets surrounding the church.
If you prefer to enjoy this place in a calmer way, you could walk the old path to the village. It is a zigzagging road beginning in Eira do Serrado, over the village. This leafy path was the only access to the village until 1959. Therefore, the nuns of the Santa Clara Convent chose the valley in 1566 to run away from the pirate attacks constantly suffered in Funchal.
If you do not want to make all the way on foot, it is advised to, at least, stop in Eira do Serrado to admire the stunning views offered by the Alto Miradouro outlook.
