The Igreja do São Tiago Church, better known as the Igreja do Socorro Church, is set up in the Largo do Socorro, and its construction is linked to a vow made by the people of Funchal in 1523 after an epidemic of fever.
The church was remodelled during the 17th century, but finally demolished in 1752 in order to build a new church, whose construction began in 1768.
