Monte, better known for being the place where the carreiras do monte are celebrated, is one of the most emblematic localities of Madeira, and one of the must visit places, not just because of its history, but also for the wonderful views it offers over the Funchal Bay.
Accessing the city is now very simple thanks to the cable car, which has its base in the Campo Almirante Rei, in the Zona Velha of Funchal, and it arrives up to the Largo das Babosas, in Monte. The tour lasts about 15 minutes and will allow you to enjoy a panoramic view of the whole city.
Once in Mont, it is worth visiting the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte Church, preceded by 74 steps. At its feet, there is a stretch of stone paved street which marks the start of the Carreiras do Monte, where it is common to find basket drivers dressed with its uniforms of white shirt and trousers, leather boots and straw hats.
One of the fascinating places of this area is the Quinta Tropical Monte Palace, which counts with a botanic garden with lush stretch and exotic vegetation where the children can have fun exploring the labyrinthic paths with ponds, caves, bridges, and fountains; and a museum with contemporary sculptures.
