Prainha is the largest sand beach in Madeira. This black sand beach of volcanic origin is hidden at first sight. To access it, you have to go through the car park set up in the highway of Caniçal to Ponta de São Lourenço.
From this beach you can have a look at the Oriental end of the island and the planes landing in the Santa Catarina Airport.
In this beach is where the Dunas da Piedade Dunes are found. They are lime fossils of geomorphological interest.
The landscape that surround it contrast with the one you will find in most of the island. Here the usual green is substituted by an arid landscape, coloured in yellow, brown and orange.
On its surroundings there is a restaurant, and the beach boasts dressing rooms, umbrellas and deck chairs, and car park.
