The Casa Museu de Cristóvao Colombo (Christopher Columbus House Museum) is located in the house where the discoverer of America stayed on his visit to the little island of Porto Santo. It has become the cultural icon on the island.
The museum has made sure to reproduce the original atmosphere where the Genovese explorer lived for a while. Here, maps, portrays and pieces of the Dutch Galleon "Sloot Ter Hooge" are displayed, among many other interesting things.
Being divided into two floors, the lower one hosts a shop and a room for temporary exhibitions, topics normally oriented around the maritime Portuguese expansion.
The first floor has three thematic rooms.
The first one, dedicated to the Portuguese expansion, shows the importance of the location of the Porto Santo Island in the Madeira Archipelago due to the maritime expansion of Portugal.
The second room, exhibits objects related to the Spanish Crown’s worldwide expansion, and how they funded Christopher Columbus’ expedition in 1492.
The third room is dedicated to the Dutch colonial Empire, and also through the partly exposition of the pillaging of the Slot Ter Hooge Galeon.
