This village, whose name means Wild River, is located in the mouth of the river of the same name, between mountains full of banana trees and other crops. To know the reason of the name "Ribeira Brava" it is recommendable to visit the village at the end of autumn or in winter, when the river flows at full. During the rest of the year, its quiet appearance hides its true nature.
Ribeira Brava counts with a shady lively avenue which goes all over the beach and ends in a little dock. Here you will find a little tower, a remain of a 17th century fortification.
In the heart of the village you will find a stone paved square where a beautiful 16th century church stands, flanked by a bell tower with its roof decorated with white and blue china panels.
In the northern end of the city it is located an old sugar mill hosting the Ethnographic Museum of Madeira, dedicated to traditional activities (mainly fishing, agriculture, knitting and wine making).
