8 km. eastwards from Funchal it is located the Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro, whose gardens are among the most gorgeous of the Island of Madeira. The concept of English garden has been made evident in them, taking advantage of the warm climate of the island.
Here, the plants, which further North died during the first frosts, bloom in all their glory without needing a greenhouse.
This garden was born thanks to successive generations of the Blandy family who have collected botanic species from all over the world. Today you can see, among others, beautiful Southern African Proteas, a kind of Southamerican exuberant flowered vine, Japanese aromatic bushes and Chinese trees. This variety creates a garden full of surprises.
These gardens are divided in a series of separate areas by fences and linked by paths, creating some little intimate areas, as the Jardim das Senhoras Garden, with its fences with peacock shapes, which leads to a large areas of grass. Another grassy area surrounds the Baroque chapel built by the Count of Carvahal, who was the first owner of the mansion bought by the Blandy family in 1885.
The main part of the land preserves its design dating back to the end of the 18th century. Also from that period is the avenue of old banana trees which lead to the mansion. Behind it, you will find a wilder forest and vegetation area which is known as Inferno, where you can see the huge ferns of New Zealand.
