The Ancient Art National Museum (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga) is constituted by one of the most relevant museums from the XII and XIX centuries in Portugal.
From the interior of this magnificent museum you might discover paintings, sculpture, drawings and many other valuable art pieces from europe and asia.
The building that houses the museum already holds a troubled history. It was first a convent (on the XVII century) from the famous Távora family, executed by Marquês de Pombal, a palace and then a Fine Arts and Archaeologic museum, inaugurated in 1884. In 1911 it was instituted the Ancient Art National Museum directed by José Figueiredo.
This museum exposes more than 2200 national and european paintings, 3200 jewelry pieces from Portugal and France, 1700 furniture pieces, 7500 pieces in portuguese, european and asian porcelain as well as 4500 pieces of fabric.
If you’re interested in history and european paintings don’t hesitate on visiting this valuable and unique museum.
