This famous square is located at the bottom of the Eduardo VII Park and at the entrance of the Avenida da Liberdade, in Lisbon.
The central monument of this square, erected in honor to Marquês de Pombal was inaugurated in 1934. Marquês de Pombal was one of the most relevant historic characters in Lisbon.
Marquês de Pombal was a statesman who ruled during the kingdom of D. Jose, between 1750 and 1777 and who was responsible for the reconstruction of Lisbon after the great earthquake, tsunami and fire of 1755 (represented by the broken stones and waves at the bottom of the central monument).
Marquês de Pombal is represented with a hand over a lion (symbol of power) and with his eyes turned to Lisbon’s Downtown.
It was on this square that many important events took place such as the Proclamation of the Portuguese Republic on the 5th of October 1910.
