Downtown, or Baixa, is constituted by a set of straight streets perpendicalurar and parallel to each other and organized side by side from the Central Rua Augusta Street.
The buildings on this area are similar to each other, the ground floor is destined to commerce and the upper floors are housing. On the top of each building there is a notable structure called pombaline cage which allows the distribution of seismic forces.
We should highlight that this area was built after the great destruction of the 1755 earthquake and tsunami and this is why even though this is an old city, it has some of the most recent constructions on the city centre.
The baixa is the best place to come for shopping and try some of the most typical products.
