Chiado is one of the most traditional districts in Lisbon, it’s located near Bairro Alto on the opposite hill of the Saint George Castle.
This district has also been associated with arts, romanticism and literature. Here all the intellectuals of each period came together and debated their ideas.
This area is known as a shopping area where you might contact the traditional artesans, commerces and traditions lost in time.
Among the elements present in Chiado we recommend your visit to the Café A Brasileira, which contains a statue of Fernando Pessoa seating at a table, due to the fact that this was one of his favourite spots, a visit to the ruins of Carmo Convent and a stop by the most typical libraries.
Here you might also encounter the Chiado Warehouses, a construction from the XX century designed by Siza Vieira after the total destruction of the old buildings due to a great fire.
