The discoveries pattern is the most recent monument on this area.
The original monument was made in wood and it was ordered by the portuguese dictator António Oliveira Salazar for the exhibition by him organized, The Portuguese World Exhibition.
The Discoveries Pattern as we see it nowadays has the shape of a portuguese caravel, with the portuguese coat of arms on the side and the sword from the Royal House of Avis above the entrance. On the bow you might see D. Henrique and, on each side of the monument you might observe several important personalities for the Discoveries and also Luis Vaz de Camões, the famous portuguese poet, and the painter Nuno Gonçalves..
The actual monument is characterized for being a replica in concrete of the original, with 50 meters high, inaugurated in 1960.
In front of the monument you’ll find a world map with signs of the several trips the portuguese sailors made and also the dates of when they’ve reached a certain point or conquered it.
